  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil Combine with red pepper flakes and cumin for substitute.
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground Cumin Add for earthy flavor with red pepper flakes substitute.

Method

  1. Choose your substitute based on desired flavor balance: Sriracha for sweetness and tang, Gochujang for fermented depth, Chipotle for smokiness, or spice blends for texture control.
  2. If using Aleppo Pepper Mix, combine 1 teaspoon Aleppo pepper with 1 tablespoon olive oil per tablespoon of harissa. Adjust oil for moisture needs.
  3. For Chipotle in Adobo, mash the chipotle thoroughly before mixing to disperse flavor evenly.
  4. When using Harissa Spice Blend, mix 1 tablespoon spice blend with 2 tablespoon olive oil and let it sit to bloom spices.
  5. Combine cayenne and garlic paste equally for a sharp, pungent mix. Add a pinch of cumin or coriander if desired.
  6. For Pepper-Cumin Mix, stir together 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes, 1 tablespoon olive oil, and ½ teaspoon ground cumin early in the cooking process for even spice distribution.
  7. Taste your substitution and adjust seasoning or oil as needed to match the texture and heat level of harissa paste.

Notes

Mash chipotle thoroughly before use to prevent uneven flavor and texture in the dish.
