5 Best Substitutes for Nori in Sushi and Seaweed Wraps

5 Best Substitutes for Nori

No ratings yet
Nori offers a unique oceanic flavor and crisp texture essential for many dishes. When you need a substitute, choose based on your priority: seaweed taste or structural support. Laver mimics both best; wakame suits soups and salads; soy paper and rice paper provide crisp wraps without seaweed flavor.

Cuisine: Asian, Japanese-inspired

Ingredients

  • Wakame Rehydrate before use, equal volume substitute
  • 1 sheet Soy Paper Use 1:1 sheet for sushi or wraps
  • 1 tablespoon Dulse flakes 1 tablespoon flakes per 1 sheet nori, strong smoky taste
  • 1 sheet Rice Paper Toast dry before use, 1:1 sheet ratio
  • Laver Same quantity as nori, similar flavor and texture
  • Kombu (rehydrated and sliced thin) Soak 10 minutes; adds flavor but no crispness

Method

  1. Determine whether your dish requires seaweed flavor or structural support to select the best substitute.
  2. For wakame, rehydrate for 5 minutes and drain well before measuring equal volume substitution.
  3. Use soy paper or rice paper sheets 1:1 as crisp wraps; toast rice paper dry over medium heat 30 seconds per side for firmness.
  4. Use 1 tablespoon dulse flakes per 1 sheet nori when sprinkling or blending for flavor, adjust amount gradually to taste.
  5. Substitute laver at the same quantity as nori for sushi wraps, snack wraps, or garnishing; handle gently due to brittleness.
  6. Soak kombu for 10 minutes, slice thinly, and add to dishes for umami flavor without crisp texture; ideal for flavoring rice or salads.
  7. Start with half the amount if using stronger flavors like dulse; adjust gradually based on final dish taste.
  8. Taste your dish after adding substitutes to ensure balance of flavor and texture fits your needs.

Notes

  • Drain wakame well to prevent watery texture and preserve dish consistency when substituting for nori.
