Substitutes for Cherry Pepper in Spicy Recipes

5 Best Substitutes for Cherry Pepper

No ratings yet
When cherry peppers are unavailable, several substitutes offer similar mild heat and tang. Banana peppers and pickled pepperoncini serve as versatile options for raw and cooked dishes, while jalapeños provide a hotter kick. Sweet mini peppers are great for crunch without heat, and a DIY pickled blend can replicate balanced tang.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Banana Pepper Use fresh or pickled in a 1:1 ratio; slightly milder heat and tangier than cherry
  • 1 cup Pickled Pepperoncini Use pickled volume 1:1; softer texture, more acidic with less sweetness
  • 0.5 piece Jalapeño Pepper Use half a jalapeño per one cherry pepper; hotter bite, remove seeds to reduce heat
  • 1 cup Sweet Mini Peppers Use fresh in 1:1 ratio; no heat, adds color and crunch
  • DIY Pickled Blend Mix 3 parts banana pepper to 1 part jalapeño with vinegar and sugar; custom ratio

Method

  1. Choose your substitute based on dish type: raw (banana pepper, sweet mini peppers) or cooked (pickled pepperoncini, jalapeño, DIY pickled blend).
  2. Prep the substitute by slicing or dicing; drain pickled peppers and remove seeds from jalapeños to adjust heat if desired.
  3. Apply the substitution ratio as per the recommended amounts for each substitute.
  4. Taste and adjust sweetness or heat by adding a pinch of sugar or reducing spicy parts if needed.
  5. For the DIY pickled blend, mix diced peppers with vinegar, water, and sugar; let sit for at least 30 minutes before use.

Notes

  • Banana peppers offer the closest texture and mild heat for fresh and pickled uses.
  • Pickled pepperoncini soften with cooking and are tangier, so add sugar if too acidic.
  • Jalapeños are hotter; remove seeds and membranes to reduce spice.
