Ingredients
  

  • 2 large apples Firm varieties like Granny Smith, Fuji, or Honeycrisp, chopped into ½-inch cubes
  • 1 cup grapes Red or green, halved and drained
  • 2 stalks celery Sliced lengthwise then crosswise into ¼-inch pieces
  • 0.5 cup walnuts Toasted in dry skillet and chopped
  • 0.5 cup mayonnaise Bring to room temperature before mixing
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice Freshly squeezed, divided
  • salt To taste, add gradually
  • black pepper To taste, add gradually

Method
 

  1. Toast walnuts in a dry skillet over medium heat for 4 minutes, stirring frequently until golden brown and fragrant. Remove from heat and let cool completely, then chop into bite-sized pieces.

  2. Chop apples into ½-inch cubes and immediately toss with 1 tablespoon lemon juice in a large mixing bowl to prevent browning. Work quickly to coat all apple pieces evenly.

  3. Slice celery into ¼-inch pieces and add to bowl with apples. Halve the grapes and drain on paper towels before adding to the bowl.

  4. Whisk mayonnaise with the remaining 1 tablespoon lemon juice in a small bowl until smooth. Season with salt and pepper, starting with ¼ teaspoon of each.

  5. Add toasted walnuts to apple mixture. Pour dressing over the salad and toss gently until all ingredients are evenly coated. Taste and adjust seasoning. Refrigerate for 15-30 minutes before serving to meld flavors and enhance crispness.
