Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter softened to room temperature
  • 2 cloves garlic minced finely
  • 2 tablespoon parsley fresh, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon thyme fresh leaves, stripped from stems
  • 1 tablespoon chives fresh, minced
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest optional
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional

Method

  1. Soften butter at room temperature for 30-45 minutes until it dents easily without melting or feeling greasy.
    0.5 cup unsalted butter
  2. Mince garlic finely and chop parsley, thyme leaves, and chives until no large pieces remain; herbs should look like small green flecks.
2 cloves garlic, 2 tbsp parsley, 1 tsp thyme, 1 tbsp chives
  3. Mix softened butter with garlic, herbs, salt, pepper, and optional lemon zest and red pepper flakes in a bowl. Stir vigorously until herbs distribute evenly and no white streaks remain.
0.5 cup unsalted butter, 2 cloves garlic, 2 tbsp parsley, 1 tsp thyme, 1 tbsp chives, 0.25 tsp salt, 0.25 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp lemon zest, 0.25 tsp red pepper flakes
  4. Spoon butter mixture onto parchment paper and roll into a 1.5-inch diameter log. Fold parchment over and shape into an even cylinder, twisting ends to seal.
    0.5 cup unsalted butter
  5. Chill compound butter in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour until firm enough to slice cleanly without smearing. Store wrapped in parchment up to 4 days or freeze up to 3 months.
    0.5 cup unsalted butter

Notes

  • Use room temperature butter for smooth mixing without lumps.
  • Wrap tightly in parchment or plastic to avoid absorbing fridge odors.
  • Slice before freezing for convenient portioning and longer storage.
