Ingredients

  • 8 oz cream cheese softened fully at room temperature
  • 1-2 tablespoon cream or sour cream optional to loosen texture
  • 4 oz lox pat dry and finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoon red onion finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon capers drained and chopped
  • 2 tablespoon fresh dill chopped
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice taste and add more up to 1 tbsp
  • black pepper to taste

Method

  1. Leave 8 oz cream cheese at room temperature for 30 minutes until it yields easily to pressure. This prevents lumps when mixing.
    8 oz cream cheese
  2. Pat 4 oz lox dry with paper towel, then chop into pieces smaller than ¼ inch. Finely mince 2 tablespoon red onion and chop 1 tablespoon drained capers. Chop 2 tablespoon fresh dill.
4 oz lox, 2 tbsp red onion, 1 tbsp capers, 2 tbsp fresh dill
  3. In a mixing bowl, stir softened cream cheese with a spoon until smooth and creamy. If too thick, fold in 1-2 tablespoon cream or sour cream to loosen.
8 oz cream cheese, 1-2 tbsp cream or sour cream
  4. Add chopped lox, red onion, capers, and dill to cream cheese. Fold gently with a spatula until evenly distributed. Add 1 teaspoon lemon juice, taste, then add more up to 1 tablespoon total. Season with black pepper to taste.
4 oz lox, 2 tbsp red onion, 1 tbsp capers, 2 tbsp fresh dill, 1 tsp lemon juice, black pepper
  5. Transfer spread to an airtight container, cover, and refrigerate at least 30 minutes to firm texture and meld flavors. Stir before serving if any liquid separates.

Notes

  • Always use fully softened cream cheese to avoid lumps.
