Cinnamon Apple Chips are thinly sliced apples baked slowly at a low temperature until crispy, coated lightly with cinnamon and sugar. Uniform slicing with a mandoline and patient baking at 225°F create perfectly crispy, snap-worthy chips without burning.

Ingredients

  • 4 - apple firm variety like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice for soaking apple slices to prevent browning
  • 2 teaspoon ground cinnamon mixed with sugar for coating
  • 2 tablespoon granulated sugar for coating with cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract optional, for additional flavor
  • pinch - salt optional, to balance sweetness

Equipment

  • Mandoline slicer Use to slice apples uniformly to ⅛ inch thickness
  • Baking sheet For arranging apple slices in single layer
  • Parchment paper Prevents sticking of apple slices during baking
  • Wire rack To cool chips and allow air circulation for crisping

Method

  1. Cut apples into ⅛-inch thin slices using a mandoline slicer. Soak slices in a mixture of 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 2 cups water for 5 minutes to prevent browning.
4 - apple, 2 cups water, 1 tbsp lemon juice
  2. Pat apple slices dry with paper towels. In a bowl, combine ground cinnamon and granulated sugar, then toss the dry slices with this mixture until lightly coated.
2 tsp ground cinnamon, 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange apple slices in a single layer, leaving about ½ inch gap between each slice to prevent steaming.
  4. Preheat oven to 225°F (107°C). Bake the apple slices for 1 hour, then flip each slice carefully. Continue baking for another 30 to 60 minutes, until the edges are golden and surfaces are dry without moisture beads.
  5. Transfer the baked apple chips to a wire rack and let cool for at least 10 minutes. The chips will crisp further as they cool. Test for doneness by breaking a cooled chip; it should snap cleanly without bending.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer set to ⅛ inch for uniform slices to ensure even baking.
  • Flip apple slices halfway through baking to dry both sides and prevent curling.
  • Store chips in an airtight container with a paper towel at room temperature for 3-5 days to maintain crispness.
