Ingredients

  • 4 pieces chicken breast 6-8 oz each, pounded to ¼-inch thickness
  • 4 slices deli ham thin slices for easy rolling
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese use sliced cheese for melting inside the roll
  • 0.5 cup all-purpose flour for breading
  • 2 large egg beaten smooth for breading
  • 1 cup bread crumbs regular or panko for crispy coating
  • 2 tablespoons butter for searing in skillet
  • 1 teaspoon salt to season chicken
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper to season chicken

Equipment

  • Meat mallet Used to pound chicken breasts to ¼-inch thickness
  • Oven-safe skillet Used to sear chicken rolls before baking

Method

  1. Pound chicken breasts to ¼-inch thickness using a meat mallet between two sheets of plastic wrap. Pat completely dry with paper towels and season both sides with salt and pepper.
4 pieces chicken breast, 1 teaspoon salt, 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  2. Layer one slice of ham and one slice of Swiss cheese on each chicken breast. Roll tightly from one end to the other and secure with toothpicks to keep the filling inside.
4 slices deli ham, 4 slices Swiss cheese
  3. Set up breading station with three shallow dishes: flour in the first, beaten eggs in the second, bread crumbs in the third. Roll each chicken roll in flour, then egg, then bread crumbs until fully coated. Let rest 10 minutes so breading sets.
0.5 cup all-purpose flour, 2 large egg, 1 cup bread crumbs
  4. Heat butter in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Sear chicken rolls 3 minutes per side until golden brown, then transfer skillet to a 350°F oven.
    2 tablespoons butter
  5. Bake 20-25 minutes until internal temperature reaches 165°F. Remove from oven, let rest 5 minutes, remove toothpicks, and slice to serve.

Notes

  • Pound chicken to an even ¼-inch thickness for consistent cooking and rolling without tearing.
  • Pat chicken dry before breading to prevent coating from sliding off.
  • Use a meat thermometer to pull chicken at 165°F for juicy, fully cooked meat.
