Air Fryer Onion Rings

No ratings yet
Air fryer onion rings offer a lighter take on the crispy, crunchy treat you know and like. The edges turn beautifully golden and crisp, while the onion inside stays tender with just the right bite. The coating blends savory breadcrumbs with gentle seasonings to create a satisfying contrast against the natural sweetness of the onions. This method cuts down on oil but keeps flavor and crunch intact, making it quick and hassle-free to prepare.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium-large onions yellow or sweet, sliced ¼ to ½ inch thick into rings, patted dry
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour seasoned with salt, pepper, and optional paprika
  • 2 eggs beaten or use egg substitute thinned with a splash of non-dairy milk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs or panko mixed with optional seasonings
  • to taste salt and pepper for seasoning onion and coating
  • as needed cooking oil spray such as avocado or canola oil, for light misting to aid browning
  • optional seasonings such as paprika, garlic powder, or baking powder for flavor and crunch

Equipment

  • Air fryer Used to cook the onion rings with less oil while achieving a crispy texture
  • Mixing bowls Used for flour dredge, egg wash, and breadcrumb coating
  • Wire rack To cool the cooked onion rings and prevent sogginess

Method

  1. Preheat air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Slice onions to ¼–½ inch thickness and separate into rings. Pat dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  3. Set up three bowls: one with seasoned flour (salt, pepper, paprika if using), one with beaten eggs or egg substitute thinned with milk, and one with breadcrumbs mixed with optional seasonings.
  4. Dredge each onion ring first in the flour, shaking off excess, then dip into the egg wash, and finally press firmly into the breadcrumb mixture.
  5. Spray both sides of each coated ring lightly with cooking oil spray and arrange them in the air fryer basket in a single layer, spaced apart.
  6. Cook for 6-8 minutes at 400°F, flip the rings, spray lightly again, and cook for another 6-8 minutes until golden and crisp.

Notes

  • Cool cooked onion rings completely on a wire rack to prevent sogginess.
  • Reheat in an oven or air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 5-7 minutes to restore crispness.
  • Microwave reheating is possible but may soften the coating.
  • Freeze raw coated rings on parchment in a single layer, then store in freezer bags for up to 2 months.
  • Use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs for a gluten-free version, pat onion dry for best crispness.
