Ingredients

  • 8 mozzarella cheese sticks string cheese or block mozzarella cut into sticks
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs seasoned with salt, garlic powder, and Italian herbs
  • salt to taste
  • garlic powder to taste
  • Italian seasoning to taste
  • cooking spray or light oil mist for even browning in air fryer

Equipment

  • Air fryer For cooking mozzarella sticks evenly and with minimal oil
  • Mixing bowls For dredging stations
  • Parchment paper To place mozzarella sticks on before freezing

Method

  1. Prepare your mozzarella sticks by drying and cutting them if needed. Set up your dredging stations: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with seasoned panko breadcrumbs.
  2. Dredge cheese sticks evenly in flour, shaking off excess.
  3. Dip them into beaten eggs, then coat with seasoned breadcrumbs.
  4. Repeat the egg dip and breadcrumb coating for a double crust, ensuring full coverage.
  5. Place coated sticks on parchment paper and freeze for at least 30 minutes to firm up.
  6. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Spray the frozen sticks lightly with oil.
  7. Air fry the mozzarella sticks at 400°F for 7–9 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crisp.
  8. Let the sticks rest 2–3 minutes to set the cheese before serving.

Notes

Store cooled mozzarella sticks in airtight containers to maintain crispness. Reheat in the oven or air fryer at 350°F to restore crispness without drying out. Freeze breaded sticks for up to 2 months for convenient snacking. Add marinara or broth when reheating to keep cheese soft if desired.
