Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Tomato Paste Mix Mix 1 tablespoon tomato paste with 2 tablespoon water to replace 1 tablespoon tomato puree.
  • 1 cup Crushed Tomatoes Use 1:1 ratio; blend briefly if smooth texture is needed.
  • 1 cup Tomato Sauce Use 1:1 ratio; simmer or add paste to thicken if needed.
  • 1 cup Fresh Tomato Puree Use 1:1 ratio; blend smooth from blanched tomatoes with a pinch of salt.
  • 1 cup Ketchup Use 1:1 ratio; adjust sweetness and acidity to taste.
  • 1 cup Roasted Red Pepper Puree Use 1:1 ratio; add lemon or vinegar if less acidity is desired.
  • 0.5 cup Tomato Juice Concentrate Use ½ cup concentrate for 1 cup puree; simmer or add paste to thicken.

Method

  1. Choose a substitute based on desired texture, flavor, and dish type such as sauces, soups, or stews.
  2. For Tomato Paste Mix, whisk 1 tablespoon paste into 2 tablespoons water before adding to hot dishes to avoid clumps.
  3. Use Crushed Tomatoes at a 1:1 ratio; pulse briefly in a blender if a smoother consistency is required.
  4. Swap Tomato Sauce 1:1; simmer uncovered for 5 to 10 minutes or stir in tomato paste to achieve desired thickness.
  5. Use Fresh Tomato Puree as a 1:1 substitute; blend peeled, blanched tomatoes until smooth and season with a pinch of salt.
  6. Use Ketchup 1:1; taste and adjust sweetness and acidity as needed to avoid overpowering the dish.
  7. Use Roasted Red Pepper Puree 1:1; add lemon juice or vinegar to balance milder acidity in compatible dishes.
  8. For Tomato Juice Concentrate, use ½ cup concentrate for each 1 cup of puree; simmer to reduce or add tomato paste to thicken.
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning or consistency of the dish as necessary after adding substitute.

Notes

Thin tomato paste with water when substituting to prevent overly thick and sweet sauces.
