7 Best Substitutes for Pollock

No ratings yet

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Cod Use 1:1 by weight as a direct substitute
  • 1 cup Tilapia Use 1:1 by weight; flakes softer and benefits from more seasoning
  • 1 cup Haddock Use 1:1 by weight; slightly stronger flavor
  • 1 cup Whiting Use 1:1 by weight; softer flesh, reduce cooking time slightly
  • 1 cup Imitation Crab Use 1:1 by volume; pre-cooked, sweet flavor, suitable for cold or light dishes
  • 1 cup Firm Tofu Use equal volume; press and marinate to mimic flaky texture and flavor
  • DIY White Fish Blend Combine mild white fish with reduced fish stock; prep requires 10-15 minutes for stock reduction

Method

  1. Choose a substitute based on your recipe and flavor preference.
  2. For tofu, press for 20 minutes and marinate; for DIY blend, reduce fish stock before use.
  3. Apply 1:1 substitution by weight or volume as indicated; adjust seasoning as needed.
  4. Cook substitutes according to recipe, adjusting time slightly for softer or thinner fillets.
  5. Taste and texture test the finished dish, adding seasoning or moisture if required.

Notes

  • Cod is the closest match in flavor and texture but can be more expensive.
  • Firm tofu needs pressing and marinating to replicate fish texture and flavor.
  • Imitation crab works well only in cold or lightly cooked dishes due to its processed nature.
