Ingredients

  • 1 to Soy Sauce Use as a 1:1 substitute, saltier and fermented flavor. Skip if gluten-free or want milder finish.
  • 1 to Tamari Use 1:1, gluten-free and richer umami. Add ¼ teaspoon honey or coconut sugar per tablespoon for sweetness if needed.
  • 1 to Coconut Aminos 1:1 ratio, sweeter and low sodium. Add extra salt or vinegar for savory balance. Skip if you want saltier or stronger umami.
  • 1 to Worcestershire Swap 1:1, tangy with anchovy undertones. Taste first as acidity can overpower delicate dishes. Skip if vegetarian or need clean umami.
  • Miso Paste Mix Mix 1 teaspoon miso paste with 1 tablespoon water to replace 1 tablespoon liquid aminos; thicker, fermented depth; best stirred warm, not for cold dressings.
  • 0.5 tablespoon Fish Sauce Use ½ tablespoon per 1 tablespoon liquid aminos. Strong and pungent; add more after tasting. Skip if vegetarian or want clean base.
  • 1 to Bragg Aminos Direct 1:1 swap, milder and less salty with no flavor shift.

Method

  1. Choose your substitute based on the dish's need for saltiness, umami, or cleaner flavor.
  2. For miso paste mix, blend 1 teaspoon miso with 1 tablespoon water to form a liquid substitute.
  3. Apply the substitute using the recommended ratios: 1:1 for most, ½ tablespoon fish sauce per tablespoon, or miso paste solution for miso paste mix.
  4. Heat or stir the substitute into your dish as needed, especially for miso paste mix to prevent clumping.
  5. Taste the dish after adding the substitute and adjust seasoning with salt, sweetness, or acidity as required.
  6. Be cautious with fish sauce due to its strong flavor; add slowly and taste before more.
  7. Avoid substitutes like soy sauce if gluten-free or fish sauce if vegetarian to fit dietary needs.

Notes

Blend miso paste with water before adding to avoid gritty texture and prevent clumping in cold applications.
