Ingredients

  • 0.5 teaspoon Jarred Minced Garlic Use 0.5 teaspoon per clove, rinse if brine tastes sharp, add late in cooking
  • 0.125 teaspoon Garlic Powder Use 0.125 teaspoon per clove, dissolve in water or oil, add early in cooking
  • 0.25 teaspoon Garlic Salt Use 0.25 teaspoon per clove, reduce other salt by 0.25 tsp, avoid in low-sodium diets
  • 1 tablespoon Shallots Use 1 tablespoon finely chopped per clove, cook until translucent, chop finely
  • 1 tablespoon Garlic Chives Use 1 tablespoon chopped per clove, add raw or end of cooking, treat as finishing herb
  • Asafoetida Use a pinch per clove, bloom in oil first, avoid raw dishes and light sautés
  • 2 tablespoon Leek Use 2 tablespoon finely chopped white part per clove, rinse well, cook low and slow

Method

  1. Select a substitute based on your need for fresh texture, concentrated flavor, or mild aroma.
  2. For jarred minced garlic, rinse briefly if brine tastes sharp and add later in cooking.
  3. For garlic powder, dissolve in water or oil to avoid clumping and add early in cooking.
  4. Adjust garlic salt by using 0.25 teaspoon per clove and reduce other salt accordingly, adding at the end.
  5. Cook shallots until translucent, chop finely, and use as a milder garlic substitute in cooked dishes.
  6. Add chopped garlic chives raw or at the end of cooking to keep their delicate flavor.
  7. Bloom asafoetida in hot oil before adding other ingredients; avoid use in raw or light sauté dishes.
  8. Slice leeks thin, rinse well to remove grit, and cook slowly to bring out sweetness.
  9. Taste as you go and adjust seasonings and ratios to suit your dish’s flavor balance.

Notes

Rinse jarred minced garlic before use to avoid watery bitterness and ensure flavor balance is maintained.
