7 Best Substitutes for Ditalini Pasta

No ratings yet
Ditalini pasta helps hold dishes together by trapping sauce and broth. When you run out, choose substitutes based on whether you need to catch liquid, fill a spoon, or add chew to a salad. This guide details ratios and best uses for seven alternatives.

Course: Pasta, Substitutes
Cuisine: Italian-Inspired

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Anelli Ring shape, slightly larger; use equal volume to ditalini.
  • 1 cup Orzo Rice-shaped, nuttier taste; use equal volume to ditalini.
  • 1 cup Acini di Pepe Very small, delicate texture; use equal volume to ditalini and reduce cook time.
  • 0.75 cup Couscous Granular texture, cooks faster; use three-quarters cup couscous per 1 cup ditalini.
  • 1 cup Small Shells Cupped shape holds sauce well; use equal volume to ditalini.
  • 1 cup Pastina Tiny, soft, kid-friendly; use equal volume to ditalini and expect much softer texture.
  • 1 cup Freekeh Smoky and earthy; use equal volume and expect longer cook time than pasta.

Method

  1. Select your substitute based on the dish's needs: Anelli or small shells for soups, orzo or couscous for salads or quick-cook recipes, and others for texture variation.
  2. Prepare the substitute according to its characteristics: watch cook times closely and adjust as needed (e.g., reduce cook time for acini di pepe).
  3. Use the recommended substitution ratios: most are 1:1 volume except couscous which is ¾ cup per 1 cup of ditalini.
  4. Add couscous at the very end of cooking to prevent mushiness; add other pastas as usual but check a minute early for ring shapes and smaller pasta.
  5. Taste the final dish to adjust seasoning and ensure desired pasta texture before serving.

Notes

Add couscous slowly and at the end of cooking to prevent mushiness and watery texture in your dish.
