Ingredients

  • 1 cup Toasted Bread Cubes Mild wheat flavor, less seasoned. Use 1 cup cubed stale or day-old bread tossed with a little oil and toasted until golden.
  • 0.5 cup Roasted Chickpeas Nutty, earthy flavor and protein-rich. Use ½ cup roasted at 400°F for 20–25 minutes to replace 1 cup croutons.
  • 0.75 cup Garlic Bread Crumbs Garlicky, finely textured, stronger and smaller than croutons. Use ¾ cup garlic bread crumbs to replace 1 cup croutons.
  • 1 cup Tortilla Strips Corn flavor, crisp and light. Use 1 cup cut and baked corn tortilla strips as a 1:1 crouton substitute.
  • 0.33 cup Parmesan Crisps Salty, umami-rich, cheesy. Use ⅓ cup parmesan crisps for every 1 cup croutons.
  • Bacon Bits Smoky, savory, rich; use half the amount of bacon bits compared to croutons due to strong flavor and saltiness.
  • 1 cup Rice Cakes Neutral, light airy texture. Use 1 cup crumbled rice cakes to replace 1 cup croutons.

Method

  1. Choose your substitute based on the dish type: bread cubes or chickpeas for salads, tortilla strips or parmesan crisps for soups.
  2. For bread cubes, cut stale bread into cubes, lightly toss with oil, then toast until golden for a 1:1 substitution.
  3. Roast chickpeas at 400°F for 20–25 minutes before use; add ½ cup roasted chickpeas to replace 1 cup croutons.
  4. Use garlic bread crumbs in a ¾ cup to 1 cup crouton ratio, scattering over salads served immediately or as soup garnish.
  5. Cut corn tortillas into thin strips, toss with oil, and bake at 375°F for 10–12 minutes for crispy tortilla strips, use equal volume as croutons.
  6. Make parmesan crisps by baking grated parmesan at 400°F for 5–7 minutes; use ⅓ cup crisps per 1 cup croutons.
  7. Use half the amount of bacon bits as croutons due to intense flavor and salt. Adjust overall seasoning carefully.
  8. Crumble rice cakes, toss with oil and seasoning, then toast at 350°F for 5–7 minutes to substitute 1:1 for croutons.
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning after adding substitutes, especially bacon bits and parmesan crisps, to avoid overpowering the dish.

Notes

Toast toasted bread cubes fully to avoid soggy texture when substituting for croutons in salads or soups.
