Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Blackcurrant Syrup Non-alcoholic, sweeter; use 1:1 ratio; thin with sparkling water or soda for cocktails
  • 1 tablespoon Chambord Raspberry-forward, sweeter; use 1:1 ratio; adjust sweetness if needed
  • 3 tablespoons Red Wine Part of 3:1 ratio with blackcurrant jam for Wine & Jam Mix substitute
  • 1 tablespoon Blackcurrant Jam Part of 3:1 ratio with red wine for Wine & Jam Mix substitute
  • 1 tablespoon Port Wine Sweeter, richer; use 1:1 ratio; best with chocolate, caramel, or roasted fruit
  • 1 tablespoon Cherry Heering Cherry-flavored, less tart; use 1:1 ratio; syrupy texture good for dessert sauces and some cocktails
  • 1 tablespoon Blackberry Brandy Higher alcohol, darker berry; use 1:1 ratio; add simple syrup if too dry
  • 1 tablespoon Blackcurrant Juice Non-alcoholic, tart; use 1:1 ratio; add simple syrup to taste

Method

  1. Identify whether you need alcohol, sweetness, or just berry flavor for your recipe.
  2. Select the substitute based on use-case: cocktails prefer Chambord or blackcurrant syrup; sauces or braises benefit from wine and jam mix.
  3. For Wine & Jam Mix, stir blackcurrant jam into red wine until dissolved.
  4. Simmer the wine and jam mixture to blend and thicken if using for cooked sauces or braises.
  5. Thin blackcurrant syrup with sparkling water or soda for cocktails if needed.
  6. Use the substitute at a 1:1 ratio, except wine and jam mix which is 3:1 wine to jam.
  7. Adjust sweetness or tartness by adding simple syrup, lemon juice, or citrus as needed.
  8. Taste test your final mixture or drink and adjust consistency and flavor to match desired balance.

Notes

Thin blackcurrant syrup slowly to avoid watery cocktails from over-thinning.
