Ingredients

  • 0.75 cup Coconut Oil Use ¾ cup coconut oil for every 1 cup coconut butter. Thinner, more oily texture. Skip if solid texture is critical.
  • 1 cup Almond Butter Use 1:1 ratio. Nuttier, less sweet. Best for baked goods and smoothies without strong coconut flavor. Not nut-free.
  • 1 cup Cashew Butter Use 1:1 ratio. Creamy and mild but less sweet. Store in fridge to prevent separation. Add sweetener if needed.
  • 1 cup Sunflower Butter Use 1:1 ratio. Nut-free, earthy flavor. May darken batter and have gritty texture. Skip if light color or coconut sweetness needed.
  • 1 cup Ghee Use 1:1 for cooking only. Rich, not vegan. Will not thicken or spread like coconut butter. Skip for vegan diets or no-bake bars.
  • 1 cup Tahini Use 1:1 in savory dishes. Bitter and savory, thinner consistency. Skip for sweet dishes.
  • 1 cup Mango Butter Use 1:1 in vegan baking. Milder flavor with subtle fruit note. Harder to find. Add coconut extract if needed.

Method

  1. Choose a substitute based on your recipe needs: texture, coconut flavor, and if used for baking, cooking, or spreads.
  2. For no-bake or spreadable texture, prefer cashew or almond butter; for cooking, select ghee or coconut oil.
  3. Adjust substitute amounts according to the specified ratio: ¾ cup coconut oil per 1 cup coconut butter; others 1:1.
  4. Blend or mix substitutes smoothly into your recipe to ensure even consistency, especially for butters like almond, cashew, and sunflower.
  5. For substitutes lacking coconut sweetness, consider adding a touch of sweetener or coconut extract if appropriate.
  6. Taste test and adjust consistency as needed, noting thinner texture from coconut oil and ghee or bitterness from tahini.
  7. Avoid using ghee and coconut oil as solid spreads or in no-bake bars where thickness is required.

Notes

Blend almond butter slowly to avoid a gritty texture in no-bake bars and smoothies.
