  • 1 tablespoon Hot Sauce with ½ teaspoon minced garlic Thinner, vinegar-forward; mix 1 tablespoon hot sauce with ½ teaspoon minced garlic per tablespoon chili garlic sauce.
  • 1 to 1:1 ratio of Sambal Oelek Chunkier, less sweet; add minced garlic to get closer to chili garlic sauce flavor.

Method

  1. Choose your substitute based on dish type: use thicker pastes for stir-fries and marinades, thinner sauces for drizzling and dipping.
  2. For Gochujang, thin 1 tablespoon of paste with 1 teaspoon water before use to match chili garlic sauce consistency.
  3. For Chili Bean Sauce, use ¾ tablespoon for every 1 tablespoon of chili garlic sauce called for in the recipe.
  4. When using Fresh Chili Garlic, mince equal parts chili and garlic finely; use an equal amount to replace chili garlic sauce.
  5. To replace with Chili-Garlic Powder mix, combine 1 teaspoon chili powder with ½ teaspoon garlic powder per tablespoon of chili garlic sauce.
  6. For Hot Sauce substitution, mix 1 tablespoon hot sauce with ½ teaspoon minced garlic to add garlic flavor before adding to dishes.
  7. Use Sambal Oelek in a 1:1 ratio; add minced garlic to enhance the garlic flavor closer to chili garlic sauce.
  8. Taste-test your substitution and adjust seasoning or thickness as needed to fit your recipe preference and dish type.

Notes

Thin gochujang before use to prevent a thick paste from making sauces too dense or sticky.
