Ingredients

  • 1 cup Fresh Mozzarella torn into chunks, creamy melt, no squeak
  • 1 cup Halloumi firm, squeaky texture, holds shape when cooked
  • 1 cup Young Cheddar sharp flavor, melts smoothly without squeak
  • 1 cup Paneer firm texture, does not melt, mild flavor
  • 1 cup String Cheese mild flavor, stretchy melt, easy to pull apart
  • 1 cup Queso Blanco softens but resists full melt, slightly salty
  • 1 cup Monterey Jack smooth melt, very mild and buttery flavor

Equipment

  • Knife To cut and cube cheese substitutes
  • Pan or Grill To cook or grill firmer cheese substitutes like halloumi or paneer

Method

  1. Tear fresh mozzarella into chunks about the size of cheese curds. Use 1 cup mozzarella for every 1 cup of cheese curds you need.
  2. Use halloumi when you want firm, squeaky cheese pieces that hold their shape during cooking or frying.
  3. Add young cheddar chunks for a sharper flavor that melts smoothly without squeaking.
  4. Use paneer for a very firm cheese that softens slightly but keeps its shape under heat without melting.
  5. Pull string cheese apart into strips for a mild flavor and stretchy melt. Add towards the end of cooking to avoid rubbery texture.
  6. Cube queso blanco small so it softens evenly but doesn't melt completely. Ideal for Tex-Mex dishes and as a topping.
  7. Cube Monterey Jack to melt smoothly with a mild buttery flavor. It won't provide squeak or tang but melts consistently.

Notes

Tear fresh mozzarella into chunks to prevent overly soft, mushy texture in dishes.
