Ingredients

  • 1 to Challah Bread Use 1:1; slightly less buttery, mildly sweet; best for French toast, sandwiches, bread pudding
  • 1 to Milk Bread Use 1:1; milkier, softer texture, less sweet; ideal for cooking such as sandwiches and toasts
  • 1 to White Bread Use 1:1; neutral flavor, firmer crumb; add butter when making French toast or grilled cheese
  • 1 to Croissants Use 1:1; flakier, more buttery, less sweet; best for baking like bread pudding; tear or chunk croissants
  • 1 to Texas Toast Use 1:1; denser, thicker slices, neutral flavor; good for grilled sandwiches, watch out for drying out
  • Sweet Rolls Use equal volume; similar sweetness, softer texture; count rolls by volume, not number; good for sliders
  • 1 to Panettone Use 1:1; fruit-studded, sweeter, aromatic; best for sweet dishes; avoid savory applications

Method

  1. Choose your substitute based on dish use: Challah for both cooking and baking, Milk Bread or White Bread for cooking, Croissants or Panettone for baking, and others for sandwiches or sliders.
  2. Prepare bread by slicing or tearing as needed; slice Milk Bread thick to prevent tearing, chunk croissants for custard absorption.
  3. Apply the substitution ratio, mostly 1:1 except Sweet Rolls which uses equal volume.
  4. For French toast or grilled cheese with White Bread, add butter to the pan to replace richness.
  5. Watch textures: avoid Panettone for savory dishes and remember Texas Toast can dry out if toasted too long.
  6. Taste and check the dish’s texture after substitution; adjust slice thickness or liquid absorption as needed.

Notes

Slice Milk Bread thicker to prevent tearing and keep the texture similar to Brioche.
