Ingredients

  • 1 cup Pumpkin Butter Swap 1:1 by volume. Sweeter with earthy undertones, reduce added sugar by 1-2 tablespoon if recipe is sweet.
  • 1 cup Pear Butter Use equally by volume. Milder floral notes; add 1 teaspoon lemon juice or cider vinegar if tang is needed.
  • Apple Sauce Mix Mix 1 cup applesauce with 1 tablespoon sugar and ½ teaspoon cinnamon to mimic apple butter's sweetness and spice. Thinner, needs thickening.
  • 1 cup Fig Jam Use equal volume. Richer nuttier sweetness, best for cooking and glazes with smooth preserves.
  • 1 cup Apricot Jam Replace 1:1. Tangy brightness; strain if chunky and warm to blend well. Can overpower delicate flavors, reduce amount in light cakes.
  • 1 cup Mashed Banana Use 1:1 by volume. Adds moisture and sweetness with distinct banana flavor, best in spice-forward baking.
  • 1 cup Prune Puree Swap equal amounts. Deep earthy sweetness with tang; blend with water to smooth texture and prevent clumps.

Method

  1. Choose a substitute based on whether you need moisture, binding, or spiced sweetness for your recipe.
  2. For Pumpkin Butter, use 1:1 volume substitution and reduce sugar if the recipe is already sweet.
  3. For Pear Butter, substitute equally and add lemon juice or cider vinegar if tangy contrast is necessary.
  4. Mix 1 cup applesauce with 1 tablespoon brown sugar and ½ teaspoon cinnamon to replicate apple butter flavor and use in place.
  5. In sauces or fillings using applesauce mix, increase cooking time slightly to thicken and adjust consistency.
  6. Use Fig Jam smoothly without chunks at a 1:1 ratio for cooking, glazing, or spreads needing richer sweetness.
  7. Use Apricot Jam 1:1, strain if chunky, warm before incorporating. Adjust amount to avoid overpowering delicate flavors.
  8. Replace with Mashed Banana 1:1 by volume for baking; best with ripe bananas and spice-flavored recipes.
  9. Swap equal amounts of Prune Puree, blending with water to smooth texture especially for dense bakes needing moisture and binding.
  10. Taste-test and adjust sweetness and spices gradually for all substitutes to match recipe balance and desired flavor.

Notes
