Ingredients

  • 1 cup Tamari Use 1:1 ratio; richer and less salty than shoyu
  • 1 cup Coconut Aminos Use 1:1 ratio; sweeter, lighter color, may need added salt
  • 1 cup Worcestershire Sauce Use 1:1 ratio; tangy and complex, best for cooked dishes
  • Soy Molasses Mix Combine 2 teaspoon soy sauce + ½ teaspoon molasses + ¼ teaspoon vinegar per 1
  • 0.5 cup Fish Sauce Use half the amount (1:2 ratio); strong, pungent, add early in cooking

Method

  1. Choose a substitute based on your recipe’s flavor and dietary needs.
  2. Prep the substitute as needed, such as mixing soy molasses blend before use.
  3. Use the recommended substitution ratio for the chosen ingredient.
  4. If cooking, add substitute early to mellow flavors or incorporate fully.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning or salt if needed to balance flavors.

Notes

  • Tamari works best for nearly identical flavor and gluten-free diets.
  • Coconut aminos offer a sweeter, soy-free alternative but may require extra salt.
  • Fish sauce gives strong umami but has a pungent aroma; use less initially.
