Ingredients

  • 1 to 1 Pastis Use in 1:1 ratio as a substitute; sweeter and slightly milder than Ouzo.
  • 1 to 1 Absinthe Use in 1:1 ratio; stronger herbal punch, higher alcohol; start with half if unsure.
  • 1 to 1 Sambuca Use in 1:1 ratio; sweeter, syrupy texture; suited for desserts and sweet cocktails.
  • 1 to 1 Star Anise Vodka Use in 1:1 ratio; lighter alcohol, pure anise flavor; infuse vodka with star anise for 3–5 days.
  • 1 to 1 Anisette Use in 1:1 ratio; milder anise, less alcohol; ideal for baking and light cocktails.

Method

  1. Choose your substitute based on your dish: Pastis for cocktails and marinades, Absinthe for strong herbal flavor, Sambuca for desserts, Star Anise Vodka for a lighter anise, Anisette for baking.
  2. If using Star Anise Vodka, infuse vodka with 3–4 star anise pods for 3–5 days before use.
  3. Replace Ouzo with your chosen substitute in a 1:1 ratio in your recipe.
  4. Adjust sweetness and alcohol intensity as needed for your dish.
  5. Taste your dish after adding the substitute to ensure the desired flavor balance and adjust if necessary.

Notes

Infuse star anise vodka for 3–5 days to avoid weak flavor in your swap.
