Ingredients

  • 0.67 teaspoon Oregano Use ⅔ teaspoon oregano per 1 teaspoon marjoram. Stronger and more bitter, best for cooking.
  • 1 teaspoon Thyme Use equal amounts of thyme for marjoram. Earthy and less sweet, good for cooked dishes.
  • 1 teaspoon Savory Use equal amounts savory for marjoram. Peppery warmth suitable for beans and vegetable stews.
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh Basil Use equal parts fresh basil for marjoram only in raw applications or fresh dishes.
  • 1 teaspoon Herbes de Provence Use equal amounts herbes de Provence for marjoram. Complex blend with lavender, adds depth.

Method

  1. Choose your substitute based on whether the dish cooks long or is fresh-finished.
  2. For cooked dishes, prefer oregano or thyme but start with less than marjoram amount to avoid overpowering.
  3. For fresh or raw applications, use fresh basil in equal amounts to marjoram.
  4. Apply the recommended ratios: ⅔ teaspoon oregano per teaspoon marjoram, or 1:1 for thyme, savory, basil, and herbes de Provence.
  5. Add oregano early in cooking to mellow pungency; add basil at the end or raw to prevent bitterness.
  6. Taste and adjust the substitute quantities gradually to maintain balanced flavor.

Notes

Add oregano slowly and taste-test to prevent overpowering the dish's delicate balance.
