5 Best Substitutes for Liquid Smoke in Barbecue & Grilling

5 Best Substitutes for Liquid Smoke

No ratings yet
Liquid smoke adds wood-fired flavor to marinades, sauces, and stews. Use smoked paprika for dry rubs and sauces or chipotle in adobo for liquid smoky heat. Charred veggies add texture and natural smoke, while coffee powder provides umami depth without direct smokiness.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon Smoked Paprika Use 1 teaspoon smoked paprika per 1 tablespoon liquid smoke. Blend with water or broth if recipe needs liquid volume.
  • 0.25 cup Charred Veggies Puree Use ¼ cup pureed charred vegetables per 1 tablespoon liquid smoke. Works best in blended dishes due to texture.
  • 1 teaspoon Chipotle in Adobo Sauce Use 1 teaspoon sauce per 1 tablespoon liquid smoke. Adjust spice level as it builds fast.
  • 2 tablespoons Soy Sauce Mix (Soy sauce, smoked salt, cinnamon) Combine 2 tablespoon soy sauce, ⅛ teaspoon smoked salt, and a pinch of cinnamon per 1 tablespoon liquid smoke. Adjust salt as needed.
  • 0.5 teaspoon Instant Coffee Powder Use ½ teaspoon instant coffee powder per 1 tablespoon liquid smoke to add roasted umami depth without direct smokiness.

Method

  1. Choose your substitute based on recipe needs: dry seasoning, liquid flavor, or background umami.
  2. For smoked paprika, blend with a small amount of water or broth if your dish requires liquid.
  3. For charred veggies, char onions, peppers, or tomatoes over high heat until blackened, remove skins if bitter, then puree smooth or leave slightly chunky.
  4. Use the specified ratio for each substitute to replace 1 tablespoon of liquid smoke as a guide; adjust to taste.
  5. Add substitutes into your recipe accordingly and taste as you go to ensure balance and desired smoky depth.

Notes

Add smoked paprika slowly and blend well to avoid a gritty texture that affects your dish's consistency.
