Substitutes for Dill Weed in Dressings & Marinades

5 Best Substitutes for Dill Weed

No ratings yet
If you run out of dill weed, several fresh herbs and blends can work as substitutes. Fresh dill offers the closest flavor replacement, while fennel fronds and tarragon add a stronger anise note. Parsley provides herbal brightness without the licorice flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Fresh Dill Use 1:1 substitute for dried dill weed; same flavor and aroma.
  • 1 cup Fennel Fronds Use 1:1 in raw dishes; stronger licorice/anise flavor.
  • 0.75 teaspoon Dried Tarragon Use ¾ teaspoon tarragon per 1 teaspoon dried dill weed; best for cooked dishes.
  • 1 cup Parsley Use 1:1 fresh or dried parsley; herbal brightness without anise flavor.
  • DIY Herb Blend (dried dill, dried thyme, crushed fennel seeds) Use ½ teaspoon dried dill + ½ teaspoon dried thyme + ⅛ teaspoon crushed fennel

Method

  1. Choose the substitute based on your dish: fresh herbs for raw salads or fennel fronds, tarragon or herb blend for cooked dishes.
  2. Prepare the substitute by finely chopping fresh herbs or blending dried herbs and spices for the DIY blend.
  3. Adjust the amount using the recommended substitution ratios for each herb.
  4. Add fresh herbs at the end of cooking or raw; add dried herbs early when cooking to develop flavor.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning to ensure herbal balance and desired flavor intensity.

Notes

  • Fresh dill provides the exact flavor of dried dill weed but wilts quickly and is not shelf-stable.
  • Fennel fronds add a stronger licorice flavor, so use cautiously in delicate dishes.
  • DIY herb blends add complexity but are best suited for cooked applications where flavors can meld.
