Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Triple Sec 1:1 substitution with Cointreau, sweeter, less complex
  • 1 tablespoon Grand Marnier 1:1 substitution with Cointreau, richer, cognac depth
  • 3 parts Orange juice concentrate Mix with 1 part vodka for alcohol content, fresher taste
  • 1 part Vodka Mix with 3 parts orange juice concentrate
  • 0.5 teaspoon Orange extract Mix with 1 tablespoon simple syrup, non-alcoholic option
  • 1 tablespoon Simple syrup Mix with 0.5 teaspoon orange extract for baking and non-alcoholic substitute
  • 1 tablespoon Curacao 1:1 substitution, more bitter and herbal than Cointreau

Method

  1. Use Triple Sec as a 1:1 substitute for Cointreau in margaritas, mai tais, and mixed drinks where sweeter, simpler orange flavor is acceptable.
  2. Choose Grand Marnier for richer cocktails and desserts needing cognac warmth and depth; substitute 1:1 with Cointreau.
  3. Mix 3 parts orange juice concentrate with 1 part vodka to substitute Cointreau in cocktails requiring alcohol but less sweetness. Stir well to combine.
  4. For non-alcoholic baking or desserts, mix ½ teaspoon orange extract with 1 tablespoon simple syrup per tablespoon of Cointreau.
  5. Use Curacao 1:1 to replace Cointreau in tropical cocktails and dishes where a more bitter, herbal orange flavor is desired. Add simple syrup if needed to balance bitterness.
  6. Adjust other ingredients like lime juice or simple syrup to balance sweetness or bitterness depending on the substitute used.

Notes

Add simple syrup gradually when using Curacao so you don’t end up with overly bitter cocktails.
