Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Vanilla Extract Use 1 tablespoon vanilla per 1 tablespoon almond extract. Sweeter, less nutty. Best when almond isn't the star flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon Amaretto Liqueur Use 1 tablespoon amaretto per 1 tablespoon almond extract. Contains alcohol; cooks off in baked goods.
  • 1 tablespoon Butter Extract Use 1 tablespoon butter extract per 1 tablespoon almond extract. Rich flavor without nuttiness.
  • 2 tablespoon Almond Syrup Use 1 tablespoon syrup per ½ tablespoon almond extract. Adds liquid and sweetness; reduce other sugar in recipe.
  • 1 tablespoon Hazelnut Extract Use 1 tablespoon hazelnut extract per 1 tablespoon almond extract. Earthier flavor, pairs well with chocolate desserts.

Method

  1. Choose your substitute based on the flavor role: vanilla for general baking, amaretto for closest almond flavor, almond syrup for drinks or glazes, butter extract for richness, hazelnut for chocolate desserts.
  2. Prepare the substitute as needed; for almond syrup, measure carefully and reduce other liquids or sugar to maintain consistency.
  3. Use the indicated ratio for each substitute: 1:1 for most, 2 tablespoons syrup for 1 tablespoon almond extract for almond syrup.
  4. Add the substitute slowly into your recipe, mixing well to integrate the flavor.
  5. Taste the final product and adjust seasoning or sweetness if necessary, especially when using hazelnut extract.

Notes

Reduce sugar and measure almond syrup carefully to prevent batter becoming too wet.
